The Charity Walk is a Walk of Hope, every step is a Step of Hope, every stride is a Stride Against Cancer and Its a Walk to Save Lives!
Walking together we can raise:
KES.25,OOO,OOO
that will save at least 10 lives or more…………………………
Their is an increasing burden of cancer in this region, therefore we recognize the need to raise awareness and confront the reality of its costly treatment. Many patients struggle to access vital cancer treatments due to financial constraints. This Initiative aims to address this gap by establishing a dedicated fund, to provide resources assistance for essential cancer treatments and other form of support to needy patients.
In our efforts to provide quality care to patients with non-communicable diseases, STMH–K had its doors opened to take care of oncology or cancer patients in 2022 by, engaging an oncologist, a clinical oncologist, training three oncology nurses and opening an oncology outpatient clinic which runs every day Monday to Friday. This clinic offers outpatient care for cancer patients to include administration of chemotherapy. Patients in need of surgical interventions are taken care of by the surgical team and after referred to the clinic for follow-up.
The patients followed at St. Theresa Mission Hospital-Kiirua oncology clinic fall three categories namely cash payers, the NHIF/insurance covered and charitable (those who find themselves needing treatment but lack the financial capacity to pay for treatment). Irrespective to which category a client falls, cancer patients face numerous financial challenges as time goes due to services that they need but are either not covered for by their insurer especially those with micro covers or have exhausted their benefits.
Cancer can be debilitating and a burden to the patients, actually Some lack the capacity to travel to the hospital for treatment and sadly we have lost patients including a 14 year old from the Northern Kenya who defaulted chemotherapy session due to challenges with travelling cost. The major contributor to clinic defaulters is lack of adequate resources to facilitate the patient and care giver vs household priorities.
Through the Initiative, we aim to raise funds and seek partnerships to support the underprivileged cancer patients within the hospital catchment area of Meru, Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi counties and beyond. The Initiative aims to provide much-needed financial support for cancer patients, increase access to cancer screening services, and offer psychosocial support to those affected by cancer, especially for the far to reach and underserved vulnerable communities.
Hope Against Cancer Initiative aims to:
- To bridge the gap in knowledge of cancer prevention, treatment and rehabilitation
- Increase uptake of cancer screening services
- Enhance positive social-cultural and psychological support
This initiative will be launched officially on Saturday 19th October 2024. We shall mark this occasion with a charity walk and a free cancer medical screening camp as dual avenues for fundraising and community promotion for early diagnosis. In support of this initiative, We seek resources support; financial contributions, drug donations for the screening, visibility material/ services among others. Our target is to raise 25 million KES to kick start the initiative. We envision this initiative as an ongoing effort and therefore we also seek long term partnerships with like-minded individuals to join us in this journey as we create a sustainable and healthier future for our community.
The sustainability of this initiative will be achieved by:
- Leveraging community and donor support to create a fund specifically for cancer treatment subsidies
- Partnering with local, national and international organizations and individuals to ensure continuous funding and resource availability
- Implementing cost-effective awareness programs that utilize existing community networks and healthcare infrastructure.
Your partnership and support will significantly contribute to the success of this initiative, making a lasting impact on the lives of those battling cancer as well as raising awareness on prevention measures and the need for early diagnosis.
