A symbol of hope and resilience……………………………………….
Since its inception in 2010, the Annual Orthopedic Screening Camp and Surgeries has been a beacon of hope for countless individuals suffering from orthopedic conditions. This commendable initiative was born out of collaboration between St. Theresa Mission Hospital-Kiirua and the esteemed, Orthopedic department of the University of Nairobi, led by Prof. Dr. Edward Gakuya. By combining our expertise, resources, and unwavering commitment to improving lives, we have been able to make a remarkable difference in the lives of patients in need.
The event unfolds in three essential phases, each playing a crucial role in ensuring comprehensive care for patients in need. The first phase involves the screening of patients with orthopaedic conditions like, Severe osteoarthritis of the hip, spine and knee, back pain, joint pain, ligament tears, frozen shoulder e.t.c . Orthopaedic surgeons and Registrars from the University of Nairobi conduct the 3days screening exercise. During the screening we offer free orthopaedic and physiotherapy consultation to all patients. The doctors also fill pre-authorization forms for those patients who might require surgical intervention and are covered by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) as the primary medical cover. This meticulous process ensures that patients receive the necessary approvals to proceed with their treatments, eliminating any potential financial barriers. This takes place during the second quarter of every year.
What happens to those patients in need of surgeries but are not covered by NHIF or any other medical cover? That brings us to the second phase…………………………
The second phase of this transformative initiative focuses on raising funds to support patients who require surgery but lack the means to cover the expenses. To accomplish this we reach out to the community and request donations from compassionate well-wishers. A unique and inspiring aspect of this phase is the “Initiative Keep Walking,” which involves participants walking a specific distance to raise awareness and funds. Participants also have the opportunity to purchase specially designed t-shirts, with the proceeds contributing to the financial support of patients in need. The community’s involvement in this walk serves not only as a fundraiser but also as a powerful symbol of solidarity and support for those facing orthopedic challenges. This takes place during the third quarter of every year.
The final phase of the initiative is undoubtedly the most crucial one—the surgeries themselves. During the fourth quarter of each year, the orthopedic department of the University of Nairobi, led by Prof. Dr. Edward Gakuya, in collaboration with other Orthopaedic surgeons, takes charge of performing the surgeries in our well-equipped theaters. The expertise and professionalism displayed by the medical team ensures that all scheduled patients receive the highest quality of care and attention during their surgical interventions. The surgeries not only provide relief from pain and disability but also restore hope and independence to the lives of patients. The orthopedic procedures performed cover a wide range of conditions, including joint replacements i.e Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement, Knee revision, Hip revision, corrective spine surgeries, and fracture repairs. By addressing these issues, this initiative enables individuals to reclaim their mobility and enhance their overall quality of life.
The dedication and collaboration of various partners have been instrumental in the success of the Annual Orthopedic Screening Camp and Surgeries. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the leadership of University of Nairobi, and all our partners for their unwavering support throughout the years. These invaluable partnerships have played a vital role in enhancing the availability of resources and ensuring the continued success of this life-changing initiative.
The impact of this initiative extends far beyond the immediate beneficiaries. By raising awareness about orthopedic conditions and promoting compassion within the community, this initiative has created a ripple effect of positive change. Thanks to the collaborative efforts with the University of Nairobi, and our dedicated partners, the initiative has transformed the lives of numerous individuals in need. By providing access to orthopaedic care and surgeries, this initiative has offered a renewed sense of hope and improved quality of life for patients who otherwise might have suffered in silence.
As this annual event continues to grow and touch more lives, it serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion, and the spirit of Love and Service. The Annual Orthopedic Screening Camp and Surgeries exemplify the potential for positive change when individuals and organizations come together for a common cause—improving healthcare and making a lasting impact on the lives of those in need. The mission remains unwavering: to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care to individuals in need and transform their lives for the better. With each passing year, the camp becomes a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of collective action.
